The Crowd (Undone)

"The Crowd," is another in my Lalapalooza paintings of people and crowds.  This is not done, but might finally be on the right track.  This painting has gone from undefined to defined to undefined.  The chance to try things out and think about how much needs to be said is a process.  This is a teaching painting.  Playing with brushwork as a means to say it in a stroke.   Hard one for me to do.  At one point there were arms and legs everywhere.  The battle to say everything goes on.  I guess saying a lot is not a bad thing if what is said is direct and selective and doesn't take away from the main concept.
That is probably why this is a teaching painting of me.  I am working on technique in an individual way.  At least I did that through most of this.  Having a painting hold together as a finished statement means there was an intent.  There was a theme or story that is abstractly pulling from underneath and weaving the poetry together.  For me, this is a crowd of people of all kinds that have arrived at a specific place, at a specific time, for the general reason of experiencing sound.  My experience in this place was tied by sound and I was there happily for my husband and three sons.  So I enjoyed watching the people who walk and talked and just moved from event to event in a wave.  These masses of people inspired by sound to travel to this place in Chicago fascinate me.  And so I will continue.

Skyline Drive - "Scenes of Tustin", April 28 thru May 12

Near the corner of Skyline and Las Brisas is this palm lined section of neighborhood.  It caught my eye, making this the second pastel I submitted to the Tustin Art League Show, "Scenes of Tustin", held at Chemers Gallery, Enderle Center, 17300 17th St. Suite G, Tustin, Ca 92780

Sunflower Fields

Just finished a section on Van Gogh at work for K through 8 and did this little tribute to him.  It was very quick and has lots of paint.  I was trying to imagine what it was like for Vincent to paint with such a thick application.  I can't imagine taking my stuff out in the field and working in such a way. I am sure he did lots of his bigger works in studio, but I am not really sure.  I wonder how many times he had bugs and things land in the paint?

Checking The Lines, Irvine Lake

Irvine Lake is a local fishing venue not far from my home.  I was out there for a concert on the shore and decided to take in some of the activities via my camera.  Not much for fishing myself, mainly because I have only fished once from the shore.  Might be something to think about taking up.  Seems relaxing and tranquil from what I have been told.  My husband has spent some time out on this lake and enjoyed himself.  It could be fun to paint out there.

On The Mesa

Last night I had a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate for the Orange Art Association.  I was particularly nervous.  Once I got started it was like being in my studio.  Great group of artist looked and with great support.
I demonstrated my under painting process and pastel application.  Every time I do something like this I have to think out my process.  I realize there is no formula and every painting speaks its own language.   Embracing my fear and using it to give the piece energy is a better path...And fun.
