Rework

Sometimes I have paintings sitting around that catch my eye and I start painting over them. I originally posted this in June and then it sat. It just wanted me to tryout a few things on it. So with a palette of left over paint I started to play and let go of the subject. I like it much better now and I mean right now. Tomorrow the brush may struck it again. Paintings sit around my studio with no future so why not have fun. Color, brushwork and value changes are best understood by trying them on.

Almost A Likeness

Over the holidays I am hoping to take photos of family to start a series. This is tricky. Emotions and just plain old loving them can stand in the way. With loved ones it is more who they are to me that makes them beautiful. Love covers imperfection, age and size. I should almost be working in abstract shape, color and emotion and forget about a likeness. So the series will hopefully get me to deal with all of that.
I posted this one a few postings ago very unfinished, stuck and was just to embarrassed to say who it was. With help from Cynthia Grilli, the zen master in my life, I was able to give it another shot. I am pleased with what I have done with this beautiful girl and can say this is one of the many ways I see Annie. All this girl is, is so very hard to express two dimensionally in oil, but it is a start.

Bobby Dew

A face for me to study.  I have drawn and painted him for a very long time and apart from my face, he is always around to observe.  He has had many looks.  Those who know him have seen his hair long, short, tossed and covered in his well worn golf visor.  His glasses change on a regular basis.  He is a funny guy, loving dad and yes, my husband of nearly 30 years.  He is a straight shooter, direct, caring and loving partner through thick in thin.  This is the face that I love!

Funny One

Getting this one done was a challenge. I love starting with an under painting of water based pigments. This one had a great beginning and went through lots of transitions. In the process the under painting was lost. I love when the beginning supports the end result. I like when the whole thing flows together. I just had to work harder and reevaluate my process and what sent me off track from my original idea.

Posing

Working with a model and making every view work for all the artists is just not always possible. Trying to get the lighting right so everyone has light and shadow is a group effort. Setting up is part of the day. It is all a part of understanding of what I am trying to convey. Sometimes I hold on to those first thoughts and sometimes I don't . I think I got there this time.
