A day painting, talking and sharing good food is a very fine day in my book. Sunday was a day I spent with fellow artists Dana Cooper, Julie Hill and Kim Vanderhoek. Julie turned her kitchen into a lovely place to paint and share thoughts and ideas. We enjoyed seeing her fabulous studio. She treated us to a wonderful home cooked meal and lovely ambiance. It was a mini artist retreat. This time together was inspiring and fun and much different than the daily life of a painter. Kelley Sanford from N.C. came a calling and shared some time with us by phone.

The still life and little black, as I call him, was sitting on Julie's (amazing and spacious) kitchen island. I was drawn to the red flowers and ended up loving little black the best.

Denise is a regular at my model sessions. I love setting up the scene. Hanging fabric from a clothes line and moving furniture around is the fun of the set up. Denise sat in this very comfortable chair and almost fell asleep. I thought the glass in her hand suggested a long evening ending in reflection and fatigue.

I once again enjoyed the application of dispersion color as an under painting. Pastels are always fun. Love the feeling of dragging the pastel over the surface of the Ampersand, pastel board. It was a fun day with lots of music and discussion among artists.

She, 6x8, pastel

I started this series a few months ago and got to #2 and stopped. It is a new direction for me. In the past few weeks I have had a few conversations with artists that has made me want to push in a new direction or just play for a while until I find out where I am going. Why I start and stop is my own discomfort and maybe a lack of faith in my journey. I like this little figurative and the fun I had while doing it. So I put the map down and I think I will cruise along and see where I go.

One of the artists that I enjoyed talking with is Katherine van Schoonhoven. She lives in the Oregon area and is down in California as part of a very extensive road trip. We met at a Kitty Wallace workshop in Portland over a year ago and it was so nice to see her again. Always inspiring to talk art and with Katherine, she also talks music. Such a treat! Visit her blog, Art and Music, follow her creative journey.

She presented me with a blog award.

An Apple A Day

I wish that is all it took to stay in good health. The season of festivities is great until stepping on the scale or not being able to remember the last time I hiked more than once in a week or two. So the diet begins. Healthy food and thinking about what is best and not what tastes best. I did enjoy the season and now it is time to pay for it...OUCH!

I always like to start the new year with old things and new information. Here I used a limited palette of Yellow Ochre, Alizarin, Ivory Black and Titanium White. For me this allows me to start up portraiture again without being totally overwhelmed. Every time I do this I am amazed at just how much can be expressed with only 4 tubes of paint. I think I will keep this as a practice throughout the year.

Time to answer the call even if I dropped the ball. I feel a little rusty after a nice family brake. The holidays were full and fun...oh and the stomach flu came visiting. Noise filled our house for a few weeks and I welcomed the familiar sound. I am so very grateful and feel very blessed. Now it is time to get back in the studio. I spent a few days cleaning and tossing and evaluating my work. In the process of doing that, I painted this little 6x8 oil and it did not come easily. Painting is not like getting back on a bike.

So I am looking forward to pushing ahead in 2012. Best wishes to all of you in the New Year. Thanks for all your comments and views of my blog. You keep me motivated. Thank you for all your support.

Ben the Corgi

Ben and Jerry (cute huh) have both pasted on and we only hope that they are romping away and celebrating a job well done. Bird On The Edge

A local bird just hopping around waiting to jump off the edge for a morsel of food to drop at our local coffee house. I am amazed at the brazen behavior of these chubby birds.

This is 12x12 pastel on Uart sanded paper with an under painting of compliments. I covered most of the painting with pastel. Sometimes I love how the under painting comes through and other times it just acts as a guide and gets covered.

I managed to get this posted on Daily Painter Originals, but missed my blog. This 6x6, is pastel on Pastelbord from Ampersand. It has a much more even texture than the hand textured boards I did on the last 3 posts. I like working on these hard surfaces. Mainly because in the end it is easier to pop them into frames. I still need a spacer and glass, but it goes together much easier and handling is easier as well. The pastel seems to stay put and I am getting uses to the sound of applying the pastel to the surface. That might sound funny, but it is important to feel comfortable. Soft surfaces make one sound and hard surfaces make another. When I work there is a rhythm that happens, almost like music. It feels tribal and I love how sound inspires me. Sound creates movement. That for me inspires creativity. I find art is completely sensory and good music, sounds, rhythm, vision and beautiful movements are important as I create.

This little 6x6 pastel is done on a hard board using gesso and marble dust as a surface texture. I painted an under painting using pure pigments in complimentary colors. The scene is from our trip to Chicago Art Institute a few years ago. I loved the body language.

Happy Day After to all. It was a great day. I ate way to much. We just sat around and talked and played a game. Love listening to the kids talk to each other. Lots of stories.

Here is another one for composition. Using the silverware is like drawing lines through the composition to divide up the space. I am still exploring. Might move onto the peppers I have in the fridge next.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love making food and eating it. Mainly I like spending the day with my kids, husband, brothers and sisters of mine and my husband and all the kids and their kids. Again, I love all of this and the fact that great food is at the center of the day. Everyone brings something yummy to share. Now with all that said, the work involved is a labor of love by all and requires a few pep talks to get it all done.

Allegory of Painting

A project completed and I am very glad. I decided to take a life drawing class this semester. It is a fantastic class at Saddleback College with Cynthia Grilli. I love everything about it except that all the homework takes away from painting time and all other time I was uses to having free. This Vermeer copy was part of the midterm. The assignment was to copy the values of colors in the original work by Vermeer using vine charcoal and touches of compressed charcoal. As anxious as I was to do this project, I really like the way it turned out and the process. Translating color to value is key to everything in painting. So this is not an exercise that I would choose to do, but I must say it was worth all the time it took.

Mighty Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Trees are trees I have enjoyed most of my life in Southern California.

They are trees with beautiful bark and tall, graceful profiles. They are the mighty giants I remember that divided large parcels of land. It was tricky putting a big tree in a small place. Working small is a challenge for me in pastel. Mainly because I like to work with chunks of chalk. Working that way makes it difficult to be exact and supports my impressionistic style. I am just loving color right now. This is a 6x6 painting in soft pastel on Uart sanded paper with a compliment under painting. I have been having fun paint with pigment as a foundation to apply pastel. Sometimes the paint shows through and other times I cover it up. I am okay either way.

Life in Southern California weather makes it a good place to live if you enjoy getting out. The temperatures make hiking an easy outing for my husband and I. This is a place called Peter's Canyon that is not to far from home. You would never know that housing surrounds this place. Once in on the path, the cares of the day are long gone.

Dry Creek "Pony" Trail

Back to pastels with this 12x18 scene from a hike a few weeks ago. Right past the tree is a creek bed that is used to release water to areas down stream. It is dry a good part of the time and easy to cross over to the mountain side of the park. I like this trail a lot because it has dry brush and cactus.

I started this painting on a sanded surface called Uart. The surface can take washes of turpentine,alcohol and water. This allows for under paintings in wet pastel, oil, ink or watercolor. I really like the texture each of those mediums bring to my work.

Clinging With Touch Up

This 6x6 oil is another go at my little pot in more direct lighting. I called it "Clinging" because the little nectarine looks like it is clinging to the pot. I am not sure if the space between the pot and the nectarine is believable. I have a few ideas on how to correct the problem, but I thought it would be fun to hear from you. What do you think?

Here is another fig painting with my little ceramic pot. I got the pot from Jill, a 3rd grade teacher where I work. She is a potter in her spare time. I told her I would love to purchase a pot from her. When I came to work a few days later this lovely glazed pot was sitting on my desk. She said it was a gift. I am so grateful to have this little vessel always ready to paint, and to think of the hands that made it is nice too.

Fresh Figs

6x6 oil on linen still life of figs and my favorite little pot. There is a fresh air market near my home that is open every Thursday. I am hooked on the marvelous tastes of the fresh produce. They actually let you taste the different fruits before you buy. This week I tried their figs. I ate so many I felt sick. Fresh and tasty with a seedy crunch.

But...Before I ate them I painted them with this little hand thrown pot. I really enjoy these colors together.

Time Well Spent

Time Well Spent is a 10x8 oil of a valuable past time. This is a precious moment in the life of this father and son. It is priceless. The young boy, standing with careful observance to the end of the fishing pole, is my great nephew James with his father Scott. James has a little brother Nathan that I painted with Scott some time ago, "Precious Moments," and the painting hangs in a gallery of family photos at the top of their stairs. According to my niece Mary, James wished there was a painting of him and his dad to go along with Nathan's. James will be having a birthday this week and this was commissioned for him. So he too will hang as an oil painting in the gallery with Nathan doing what is most precious...spending time with dad.

High Grass Trail

This is what my allergies just love. Even though my eyes start to water I think it is wonderful to be out hiking in the tall grass every once in a while.

I enjoyed the handling and laying in of color with pastels on this and feel a little abstract application coming on. I found myself working in vertical and horizontal strokes, loving the balance of each mark. I think what I love most about pastel is the fun of the application.

Painting days are always rewarding. Today I spent the day working on the head. The morning was working with my Asaro head. It is a plastic head that shows all the planes. It makes it easier to see how the light is carried over the surface of the skull.

In the afternoon I had a model who is my dear friend Mary's grandson, Peter. He was a good sport and sat for a few hours. I got out my pastels and started working. I was happy to capture him.

A Road On The Edge Of Town, Santa Inez, California

My husband and I just took our trip with our son to return him to SJSU. I have grown to love the drive and the central California landscape. It is in many places a reflective view of life before modernization. There is a quietness that is peaceful to the mind and spirit. These drives make me dream about living in a quiet environment, one of daily contemplation. My creative side has room to breath and stress is lifted. I would love a big barn to paint in and maybe teach painting. So often I am overwhelmed with the comings and goings of life in the O.C. It is a dreamy thought.

This Painting was done on a new product, at least for me, called Pastelmat. It has a suede feel to it and is a fabulous surface to apply pastel. I worked directly on the surface with pastel and did not start with an under painting like I have been doing as of late. I still used a nupastel (hard stick deep purple) to establish my value pattern by massing in areas with darks and lights before going to color. Kinda like an under painting, but faster.

This painting was done thinking of my boy who has once again left the nest. I pray for a wonderful year of learning, enlightenment and adventure.

Cowboy On The Trail

Setting Up

I found myself enjoying the feeling of nupastels. They are on the hard end of soft pastels and come in long thin square sticks. I like to use them because I love to draw above all and I get the chance to experiment with line and and shape. I started this painting with a watercolor under painting in compliments. I tend to cover up most of my original painting, so why do it? It loosens me up. It is rhythmic and relaxing and gets me on the map. So when I place that first mark down with soft pastel it doesn't stand alone. It is a mark that feels right or doesn't because of what is already down in the under painting. Silly, maybe, but it is my process of warming up to the surface and feeling my way through. It works for me. Sometimes I just lay it down with strong strokes in a very alla prima style, but today I love tickling the paper and let line build slowly and securely. It is a different style that is directly related to me and my personal feeling about the journey from start to finish.

Admiring The Fresh Selection

It has been a slow crop this year, but the tomatoes we've picked have been tasty. This little 8x8 pastel was done on Wallis sand paper. I enjoyed working with reflections on my steel mixing bowl. The range of reds to work with on the tomatoes made this very challenging.

Branching Out

Last night was another evening painting under the setting sun at Chemers. It was so much fun visiting with all the artists and talking with friends that I didn't finish my painting last night. So today I put the finishing touches on it. This is a 12x18 pastel on sanded paper from Kitty Wallis. The fun thing about it was I started with a ink under painting in colors that supported the subject. I typically start with a value painting in a dark nu pastel that I apply turp to get it into the paper. It is usually a gray on color value under painting. So painting with these colorful inks was very freeing and fun. It created a value map in color the support the soft pastel.

The subject is from our local hiking park. This is one of the pretty trails my husband and I enjoy hiking in Santiago Oaks Nature Park in Orange, California

Mid Day Sunlight

A Special Place

This is a 18x18 oil on stretched canvas painted as a commission. On my trip to Santa Barbara last month I had the opportunity to see a part of the coast that I would never have known about without my friend Connie's help. She recently moved to the Santa Barbara area. Connie is a realtor and covers the Santa Barbara vicinity with properties in the Orange County area as well.

Hope Ranch is one of the areas she is developing clientele. This is an amazing area of country life with sprawling ranch homes on acres of land sitting beautifully on the bluffs over looking an amazing stretch of beach. The area includes a fabulous golf course and country club. As you drive through the rambling hills you can catch a glimpse of horse back riders on the trails throughout Hope Ranch.

This painting depicts the private pathway to the cabanas and beach. It is a forested path that takes you to the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Back to the easel with some red peppers at my side. I must say they were very fun to paint and that is what I love about painting. The fun of seeing something and grabbing it to paint. I saw these peppers and just had to paint them. So fresh and bright wearing the most brilliant red nature offers.

Summer Blooms

This is a 6x6 oil on Raymar canvas. I have had a slow start to summer as far as painting goes. Summer Blooms was painted with a few hydrangeas from my yard set out on a table in direct sun. I have never seen anything wilt so fast. So I painted faster and had to quit sooner. Not a bad thing as I might have just noodled my way to a over worked painting. Direct and fast seems to keep things fresh.

I have been teaching summer school everyday. Love it, but it wipes me out. I realized if I want to paint I need to paint small. So back to the 6x6.

Sunset On The Santa Barbara Mesa

Santa Barbara has some of the most beautiful coastline. This is a stretch of beach below Mesa. I was out on a walk through a forest area up on the mesa. It was just wonderful. At the end of the walk was a set of stairs down to the beach. It was perfect timing for a wonderful sunset.

This was a demonstration pastel I did as part of an evening gala and concert series in collaboration with Enderle Center and Chemers Gallery in Tustin. I currently have six framed pastel paintings on display and for sale at Chemers Gallery.

This is the starting place for many trails. Santiago Oaks is a hidden jewel in the city of Orange. It is a place that connects to other local parks. You can walk for miles and miles with still more to see. Hiking these local trails has become a wonderful past time for my husband and I. It is a great place to shake off the duties of the day and let your mind travel. Being in this environment has helped me in seeing values and color as they are, ever changing with the day.

Welcome to Alta... The Place To Go

Starting this afternoon through the end of July, my work will be on exhibit at Alta Coffee Warehouse & Roasting Co. on the Newport Peninsula. This place is the place to go for great organic coffee, desserts, wonderful food, nightly weekend entertainment and ART! Santa Barbara Coast

The California coast is just forever beautiful. I grew up with the crowds of the Southern California beaches. The summers are over run with visitors taking advantage of the warm sand and recreation. Moving up the coast is a much different feeling. There are so many beautiful beach spots. It takes some hiking down, but it is worth it. From the edge of the cliffs to the sand and the surf it is quiet and beautiful. I love the peacefulness of it.

I am presently in Big Sur and wow!, what a beautiful place. Hoping to get some art work out of this picturesque place. The hardest thing is where to start and how to edit such beauty. So that will be coming soon.

Lovely day plein air painting in Santa Barbara. This is an area very close to the Mission. I painted in a wonderful park where people and there dogs and children came and went. There is a beautiful rose garden for everyone to enjoy and wander around the many different species. Santa Barbara is a beautiful place to visit and I am grateful for the chance to paint here.

I picked this bundle of red roses up at the grocery store and stuck them in a vase to see and enjoy all last weekend. I started painting them on Mother's Day. It was a wonderful day. I was served a lovely dinner and fabulous dessert in the company of 2 out of 3 of my boys, my husband, my mother, my sister, brother in law and beautiful niece. I got to paint and share the day with folks I love.

Limited Color

Still working with a limited palette of vermilion, yellow ochre, blue black and titanium white. I found it very frustrating this time. Dealing with a photo is another issue for me. I need to really get contrast and shadow in photos. Well the whole thing is about color derived from a limited palette, but I really want to produce better work. I'm just not sure what direction I am going in right now. These times always produce growth if I am patient.

A Zorn Filled Expression

I love doing self portraits. In that I am always available to model for myself. I should have a number across the bottom as it could be an in take photo from the jail archives. With all that said, I find self portraits to be a wonderful way to experiment with color and paint etc. This is painted using Blue Black, Vermillon and Yellow Ochre along with titanium white. This is the palette that Anders Zorn used throughout his life time. I am just starting to read about him and hopefully next time I post I can tell a little about him.

Sunday was the last day of the Bischoff show in Pasadena. My husband and I drove up in the rain and the down pour on the way back. Golden Hours

The hours in the late afternoon when everything is rich with color is called the golden hours. It is like the curtain call before the end of a play. I first heard this reference was from my son who studied film in college. These are the hours when the light is doing all the work. No need to fill or bounce. It is cheaper too. Less to rent.

So as an artist I find light to be my best friend and at times my worst enemy. In plein air it is hard to capture. I need to take that mental picture and paint fast without losing my vision or concept which always involves the light. In my studio it is a little easier to control, but again it effect what and how I see. The best hours for me to paint in studio is morning. Outside it is morning and afternoon, because mid day light can flatten contrasts. Shadows are important in my painting and come into play early in the game. I find I look for light always with her best friend shadow for a little drama.

Being still for a model session always amazes me as I can't stay still for 30 minutes and that includes sleeping. One thing that does happen to the model is the lack of expression. To sit for a period of time takes it right out and I find the model is far far away in thought and separate from there bodies in a way. The goal along with being a good model is to stay as still as possible. I just find we lose just a little of that spark or spirit that as an artist I hope to bring to my painting. Can't have it all.

When In Back Bay...
