Sometimes we wait a long time to get to a place we have always wanted to go and there is only one day to see it all. It can feel like a chore checking off the list and overwhelming too.

Observing Life
Chicago Art Institute is one of the greatest places to observe the observers.
Pastel on hand textured hardboard using marble dust, gesso and a paint brush is a 6x6.

Interesting
This little 6x6 pastel is done on a hard board using gesso and marble dust as a surface texture. I painted an under painting using pure pigments in complimentary colors. The scene is from our trip to Chicago Art Institute a few years ago. I loved the body language.

"A VISIT WITH MARY"

Continuing along on our vacation in Chicago we spent some time in the Art Institute of Chicago. Never enough time to really get how magnificent the collections are, that are housed in this beautiful building. If I could, I would pick one painting a day and sit, admire, study it and maybe draw from it, to get in the head of the artist; now that would be an experience.
Mary Cassatt's work is glorious to behold. Her attention to relationship not only in composition, but the timeless relationship of mother and child brings tears to my eyes. The beauty of the flesh as I observed standing and looking is so wonderfully lifelike and pulls away from the canvas as if to be touched. Oh I am breathless. I don't begin to copy, but merely suggest her intimate painting, "The Bath", 1891-92. My husband was quite taken with this painting and I could not resist the chance to record the impression it made.

"WHERE TO NEXT?"

Traveling and sight seeing is a day of decision making. I caught sight of this couple sitting on the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago planning there next stop. If I was to show the full view before cropping the scene to paint you would see my husband taking a snooze on the step to the right of them. We had just spent the morning in the Art Institute and even I was exhausted. What a fabulous place. Never enough time for me there. I was resting with my camera ready. The city was bustling with activity and I had lots of time to take people photos for study and reference.
So grateful for such a wonderful vacation with my husband and my boys.
