This is a painting I am working on with
Jason Dowd at The Art Studio in Westminster California. I feel very fortunate to be taking a few lessons with him. I am intimidated and really just want to watch him paint. I started this painting of my son Wes with some concern that I could not capture the beautiful spirit of this young man. I started laying in the basic form and values of the planes of his head. The first fight I had with myself was to not go to the eyes or for that matter any of the features. Second is understanding the slight differences of color as they move about the face. Third is the warm and cool of shadow and light. All of these things are overwhelming to think about in starting a portrait. Until it becomes understood through experiencing the process it is exhausting. I know that is a lot of brush miles. So I must say that I got a lot of help from Jason on this. I found it just as important to watch him and ask myself questions as he went along. I asked him questions. He could see so much more than me. I have this desire to rush and watching him relaxed me enough to understand the importance of process. I hope to finish this soon and post it.

First of all, your son is so handsome!
When you say the process is exhausting (because of all the new information that isn't automatic yet), it reminds me of some classes I've been in when everyone is concentrating and sighing a lot. Are you sighing a lot? It means you're being challenged.

This is coming along very well. I can tell already that I'm going to like the painting more than the photo. Your figure work is going to take a leap ahead because of this class.
